As part of the implementation of a stronger high-speed rail network, the Spanish Government has instituted a major programe of station restructuring, including the creation of many new stations. The proposed infrastructural building provides a new facility that will connect with the city’s existing FEVE station via a new tramline. The challenge was to integrate a new underground transport interchange with commercial, business and leisure space, to create a new landmark for the citizens of Leon. Driven by a deep respect for the architecture of this magnificent city and a quest for clarity of passenger movement, the scheme is both a celebration of the experience of entry into Leon and an attempt to reduce the complexities of modern travel.

Leon’s Transport Interchange (LTI) is conceived as an above-ground extension of a hyper-connected underground world of tunnels. Commuters can follow a public path of escalators and lifts carved out of the building mass, to enjoy a range of facilities while overlooking Leon’s riverside. A high efficient business center, music and arts facilities, conference rooms, gym, exhibition areas are distributed throughout the building. The climax of the public path is a sky restaurant and café with panoramic viewing platform, which also serves as an unconventional waiting lounge for commuters. The combination of public access and mixed program make LEON’s Transport interchanger a fluid continuation of city life.

Built as a major transportation node with multiple and varied functions in one space, Leon’s Transport Interchange is by default an efficient concept. The development is also poised to set a new sustainability standard, consuming less energy and, moreover, intelligently reuse it. One of the basic elements of the designing process was to integrate structure, vertical movements, views, air and daylight supply. This was achieved by distributing the loads towards the perimeter of a standard steel column, generating a modular system of structural courtyards which by bringing natural illumination vertebrates both the whole building and the designing concept.
